Introduction
Acoustic Phonetics is a subfield of Phonetics which deals with acoustic aspects of speech sounds. It includes the analysis and description of the physical properties of speech signal such as frequency, intensity and duration. Acoustic research has become one of the most promising lines of language research internationally however it is still less explored research area in our local context.

Center for Language Engineering (CLE), Al-Khawarizmi Institute of Computer Science (KICS), University of Engineering and Technology (UET), in collaboration with Society for Natural Language Processing (SNLP), is conducting CLE Post-Graduate Certificate in “Fundamentals of Acoustic Phonetics”. This program is specifically targeted for faculty and researchers from disciplines including Urdu, English, Applied Linguistics, English Language Teaching, Electrical Engineering (Speech Processing), Speech Pathology, and related areas and is organized on weekends to encourage and facilitate faculty participation.
Objectives
The aim of this certificate is to advance the field of Acoustic phonetics and its research in the local context. This program will help the participants to identify the unexplored areas of research in the context of Urdu Phonetics and understanding a broad range of challenging problems, including:
  • Teaching of English / Urdu language and speech
  • Phonetic comparison of languages
  • Child language acquisition
  • Speech communication technology and speech processing
  • Synthetic speech
  • Automatic recognition of spoken messages
  • Speech perception and hearing
  • Pathologic speech and language
Coverage
Through this certificate the participants will study the source-filter theory for sound production along with practical techniques for acoustic analysis of speech using PRAAT software. The program will cover the following units:
  • Articulatory Phonetics of English and Urdu
  • Introduction to Acoustic Phonetics
  • Temporal and Spectral Analysis of Vocalic and Consonantal Sounds
  • Acoustics Analysis of Prosodic Features
Target Audience
This training is targeted for faculty and researchers in the following and other related areas
  • Applied Linguistics
  • English Language
  • Urdu Language
  • English Language Teaching
  • Speech Pathology
  • Computer Science (Speech Processing)
  • Electrical Engineering (Speech Processing)
